Breast implants are prostheses designed to increase the size, improve the shape and correct breast asymmetry in women. Breast implants are made of silicone or saline, and can be placed under the breast tissue or under the pectoralis muscle. Prior to surgery, the plastic surgeon will meet with the patient to discuss her goals and expectations, as well as to evaluate her general health and medical history. During the procedure, an incision is made in the skin near the breast and the implant is placed in place. The incision is closed with sutures and covered with a bandage.
